A laurel showing 8 nominations for Confessions to Code in the 2025 48 Hour Film Project, Cincinnati

 How Did We Do?

There were 13 award categories. We received 8 nominations and were passed over for five. That sounds pretty good, but two teams were nominated for 12, only missing out on Special Effects (neither of which had any). Another team had 11.

That puts us fourth in a field where we felt (as objectively as possible) that we had a top-2 film.

Here’s how it shook out:

Nominated for:

  • Best Directing
  • Best Cinematography
  • Best Editing
  • Best Writing
  • Best Special Effects
  • Best Sound Design
  • Best Production Design
  • Best Use of Character

Passed over for:

  • Best Acting Ensemble
  • Best Actor
  • Best Use of Prop
  • Best Use of Line
  • Best Use of Genre

Other Awards

These awards will also be given out, but were not part of the nomination process:

  • Best Film (plus 2nd Best & 3rd Best)
  • Audience Choice – Best Film
  • Audience Choice – Best Trailer
  • Audience Choice – Best Poster

Our Analysis

It’s concerning. In the past two years, in two different cities, we have been shut out of awards. It’s frustrating. Yes, we have fun and yes, we learn things every year. But we are making films with good stories and better production value than many of the films we compete against.

I’m sure we can never be completely unbiased, but one of the top-three films two years ago had unintelligible dialog and other sound issues. If 30% of the judging is “Technical Quality”, how does a film with significant issues make the top-three?

Questions like this make us lose faith in the fairness of the competition. And that makes us fearful that the same will happen this year, despite the fact that we made a pretty damned good film. We’ll know for sure in a few days.

And…

Regardless of what happens with the 48 Hour Film Porject awards, Confessions to Code did get a little love by being selected to a film festival. Read about what’s going on with Confessions to Code awards.
